There are two style of chart to choose from – Sidereal, or Tropical. Tropical is the most commonly use zodiac in western astrology, and is probably the system with which you would be most familiar. Sidereal astrology is the older astrology, dating back to Babylonian days and is based on where the constellations are physically located when viewed from earth. Basically the sidereal (or star) zodiac is based on the constellations as they are, whereas the tropical (or symbolic) zodiac uses the constellation positions as they used to be. This means that if a chart was drawn up for both of these systems using exactly the same birth information, that the planets would be in different positions (at the moment there is approximately 24 degrees difference between the two zodiacs). The sidereal method takes your date of birth back twenty-five days and calculates your chart from there. For example, I’m born on 9th June, so in the Tropical Zodiac my sun (or star) sign is Gemini, but under the Sidereal Zodiac, my sun (or star) sign is Taurus.

Which to choose? It’s totally up to you, some people identify more with their Sidereal chart, but as I said, the Tropical Zodiac is more commonly used and is probably the system with which you are familiar.
